Whilst the script sometimes leaves something to offer, the direction and performances are very tight. Dirk Bogarde is exceptional.

The piece as a whole really does a fantastic job of highlighting the filth of war and the severe conflict between duty and morality. There are some fantastic transitions and shot compositions.

Pacing is occasionally awkward, especially after the trial concludes, however it picks up for a powerful and poignant ending.

    This is a masterpiece.

The cinematography of this film is absolute god tier and creates something truly special. Outside of this though, the story is very compelling and has a lot of depth to it; the performances, especially Edward Woodward are incredible; a perfect companion to the wonderful script.

A relatively by the numbers martial arts style flick with some interesting social commentary thrown in, even if the writing and story isn't that great.

The use of female characters was not particularly special, often relegating them to "people that bad things happen to for the purposes of the male character's development".

This is a bad movie made incredibly well.

Bigelow is a very talented director and carries what is a frankly atrocious script and makes is bizarrely entertaining.

Keanu Reeves gives one of his worst performances to date whilst Swayze drips with charisma.

The plot takes some less than ideal turns and keeps going when you think it should just end. The commentary on toxic masculinity is fascinating albeit rather fluffed towards the back end.

Plenty of iconic moments thanks to Bigelow but make no mistake this is a 'good' bad movie.
