The first half of the film is a really successful social critique of racism in Germany in the 70s. The characters and emotions really get to me. Emmi's breakdown in the restaurant in particular, where everything comes crashing down on her and she lets out real anger for the first time, anger at the world and the “pigs” and how unjust social ostracism can be for such terrible reasons, is touching.
