  Cleaners explores a range of "hiya", or shame, in different characters and narratives.

  Stephanie's classmates describe her experience as nakakahiya after a stressful performance. Two types of outcasts, Angeli and the emo kids, are mahiyain and have difficulty connecting with others. Feelings of kahihiyan are shown in Britney and Francis' relationship as they battle with societal standards of gender. The political desires of the Barbaran family illustrate the boldness and kawalang hiyaan (shamelessness) of seeking political power.
