    Berberian Sound Studio

    ★★★★½

The sound of horror; this is the soundtrack for your nightmares.

Berberian Sound Studio is as much an ambitious homage to '70s Italian horror films as an ambiguous art horror film that stands on its own two feet. It is brilliantly lensed and framed, and it boasts with one of the best sound designs I've ever heard.

Even though I am not totally convinced about the ending and the film does have some repetition midway through, I cannot but highly recommend this. If for nothing else, the thick atmosphere and complete lack of jump scares make this a definite bright spot in modern horror landscape.

Apocalypse Now but with more daddy issues and stupidity. Surprisingly the script that constantly underestimates the viewer didn't take too much away from the gorgeous visuals to enjoy the film for what it is: another overcooked science fiction film.

    The Rise of Retroactive Continuity.

In the wake of The Force Awakens's safe but exciting start of the new trilogy, The Last Jedi finally managed to get some distance to the original trilogy and by doing so laid the groundwork for the saga to go and explore new and interesting ideas. The Rise of Skywalker forgoes most of that by bringing in all the ghosts of the past. The end result is a rather forgettable movie filled with missed opportunities.

An extremely frustrating film until the climax. Then something magical happens.

    The Shape of Water

    ★★

By ticking all the boxes for social justice warriors, The Shape of Water is as subtle as a killer whale in a china shop.

Guillermo del Toro and his co-writer Vanessa Taylor have concocted this fish soup by making the Creature from the Black Lagoon and Amélie meet cute by way of 50 Shades (and even throwing in a cold war subplot for good measure).

With today's explainer culture in-your-face social commentary is probably considered valid, but forcing ideas down…
