After watching the new 2022 Director’s Edition I’m revising my rating up to 4 stars from 3.5. This movie actually has a lot of great subtle touches and the new version looks wonderful. Some subtle edits have rendered it sharper in terms of pacing (even if this will always be the “slow” Trek movie), and it sets some really rich things in motion re: Spock’s character.

House of Sand and Fog 2003
A lot of people have complained that the story's weakness is how it all hinges on some simple, stupid things that could have been cleared up easily. I guess for me that's actually part of the film's poignant tragedy; in real life people do (or fail to do) simple stupid shit all the time, and it frequently does eventually lead to terrible consequences.

A quiet, slightly quirky look at life in small-town Holland. It’s a bit slow but has its moments. This was supposedly the first Dutch film screened in the US and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, so worth seeing by those really interested in film history of that sort.
