“Music is movement” as Bernstein says… a satisfying depiction of a woman who became so skilled at navigating a particular cultural/political landscape (at the expense of her own humanity) that she didn’t notice the rules changing around her until it was way too late. It turns out the very humanity she gave up in order to achieve professional greatness was the only thing that could have saved her from her own downfall. I found the last scene to be absolutely perfect.

The Square 2017
Deeply uncomfortable, sharp commentary. Doesn’t strike me as comedic. Incredible acting, editing and cinematography. Score uses a lot of beautifully recorded, instrumental-feeling solo vocals. Especially recommend to anyone who works in/around a nonprofit arts org. 4/5 because I found it genuinely painful to watch. I do think the pain is a necessary part of it but I’m not a masochist when it comes to my viewing preferences.
