  Much has been made of the whole long-takes to one-take effect, and Deakins produces some mesmerizing work to be sure. But what was most arresting about this one for me was the way it was a war movie in which the meaning comes in symbols. This isn’t Saving Private Ryan. And while it’s not THIN RED LINE by any means, nor is it asking the same questions as Malick’s film, I would argue its soul is closer to that film…
