Hoffman is the best actor of this generation. Completely carries the whole movie, was laughing to myself because every scene where he’s not gambling the guy is just so obviously miserable. Mahowny’s whole life is going to work, lying face up on a bed, ignoring his girlfriend and gambling. Hell yeah.
Cons are Minnie Driver’s atrocious attempt at a Canadian accent and the obnoxious early 2000s editing. Other than that it’s a banger. Mahowny rules, Hoffman is the goat. RIP king.

Kind of touching and relatable at times, Philip Seymour Hoffman is great per usual in his limited screen time, Sandler tries but his character is annoying to the point where I almost turned this off more than once which I think was the point but damn he was really testing my patience. Really absurd with no discernible plot. Can’t believe Paul Thomas Anderson would go from this nonsense to two of the greatest films of all time as his subsequent works. Didn’t really like it overall but has some positives I guess.
For some reason I’ve never watched this until now. Completely blew me away emotionally. Cried like a child at the end, holy shit. Absurd behavior from me. Immediately after watching it I was hit with this immense feeling of sadness that I’ll never get to watch this for the first time again.
One of the best movies ever made, the message is timeless and really is something I needed to hear. Unreal.
