This film’s satiric elements brought to mind Jonathan Swift (A Tale Of A Tub moreso than A Modest Proposal), and though I could make an argument that the movie, as a whole, is a satire, to do so would be in bad faith. Coppola’s sleeve-worn heart can’t be ignored.
I had avoided Rare Exports for fear that it was akin to Holiday Horror such as Jack Frost or Santa’s Slay (Don’t spear me, bro! It’s just not for me.). I was way off-the-mark. I’ve really come to love Folk Horror, so those elements really appeal to me, and this also happens to have one of my all-time favorite tropes: Child Ahab. This is probably a holdover from watching these movies so young, but any time a child makes it their mission to kill the monster, my investment soars.
