Citizen Kane 1941
An incredible film about a powerful media mogul who defines the news agenda and yet cannot define his own legacy. Its primary narrative device demands that - after the initial newsreel - we only ever learn about Kane through the opinions of those that knew him. This, coupled with Thompson's journalistic pursuit of "Rosebud", makes Kane a three-dimensional yet motivationally elusive character.
Citizen Kane asks: "what does a life stack up to in the end?". We find that when possessions, wealth & power are gone, all that is left is what other people think - and no amount of money or media influence can change that.

The Seventh Seal 1957
The Seventh Seal constitutes many of the characteristics of a stage play: the sparse setting; the lean cast of characters; the theatrically symbolic costume design; and, above all, the sense that every line in the script was written with the hefty weight of thematic intention. Ideas of life, death, faith, kindness, doubt, suffering and redemption are analysed via bold simplicity coupled with striking visual metaphor.
