  What a fucking movie. An absolute masterclass in ratcheting tension over the entire course of the runtime. Visually stunning. Weighty, gritty, real. Left me floored. This might be a perfect film.

  Mid-tier movie, which is shocking, considering it’s a Nolan film. While some might give it a pass considering it’s one of his earlier films, I don’t think that’s a good excuse, considering “Memento”, which preceded this, was 10x more visually and structurally unique/creative. There is no element of this film that’s particularly “superb”. Every aspect is just kinda…mid. Visuals are mid, characters are mid, plot is mid, and the action is mid. I honestly wouldn’t ever watch this again.

  Jeez this movie left me feeling shitty after. It completely succeeds tonally. The atmosphere is unsettling and the mystery is actually quite compelling. The whole time it seems like you’re being pulled in a certain direction until the third act where a seemingly inconsequential detail returns to flip the script around. The ending does a great job of highlighting that there truly were no “good” guys in this story. The three leads were solid, and most of the supporting characters were great. Laura Linney’s character was bizarre though, I have no idea what her deal was. Not a “fun” watch, but a good one.
