  The Batman begins with the great promise of a detective noir by way of sharp direction, brooding cinematography, moody narration, and intelligent performances set in the most grounded, visceral edition of Gotham yet…. And still, a poorly devised mystery and fear to commit to a bold new perspective on the morality of the Caped Crusader leaves the film wanting of substance, ultimately falling short of testing the analytical and emotional prowess of the World’s Greatest Detective.

  This was the first horror movie I ever saw, and never made it all the way through. Less terrified than when I was 8, my film education has lead me to an appreciation for this movie as the landmark that it is. “It won’t let us leave!”
