It gets criticism for its orientalism, but that's a by-product of being a mix of the film Gunga Din and pulp adventure comics—not only is it set in the 1930s, it's a pastiche of entertainment from that decade. The movie is a wholly exhilarating and macabre adventure from start to finish.

Tightly constructed plot and electric dialogue. This is a showcase for Tony Gilroy, and I love what he's done with Star Wars recently. Also, I think he would be a fantastic playwright.

I think this could be the greatest prank of all time, that so many people love this and that it was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. It's tedious—it's not a good sign when I'm checking how long is left 15 minutes in. Also, so many people say the movie is a deep and beautiful lake, and then when I've checked it out, found it to be a series of 500 muddy, one-inch-deep puddles. We've gone from Kubrick's apes to rocks with subtitles.

It's a fun popcorn flick. The director seems to be all in on over-the-top '90s action and you can tell it's written by Shane Black with its neo-gumshoe-movie dialogue that's funny, snappy, and unrealistic. Geena Davis has a ton of presence as usual but the editing is a little confusing at times and the plot has the feel of a B-movie. Ultimately, Samuel L. Jackson makes it better because he has a lot of quotable lines and he doesn't disappoint with his Samuel L. Jackson-ness.
