  There’s a cut in this where one of the Maries is falling down, that cuts straight to her sitting down somewhere else completely different at the same speed, just one of the really magical bits of editing in this thing. Definitely definitely watching on an empty stomach next time

  The moment Toros takes the gag off Ani is the moment where she realises her race is run - it’s hard to pinpoint on the first watch, but everything after that is her desperately treading water. Really brilliant

  You might be forgiven for thinking that Mel, a film about a former Armenian weightlifting champion coming out as trans, might interrogate the vicious treatment of trans athletes across every sporting body, from rugby to cycling, a desperately-fought battle in the confected culture war against trans people. Of course, Inna Sahakyan doesn’t owe it to us to provide an excoriating criticism of sporting bureaucracy in what is ultimately a very personal story of belonging, but it’s a curious omission in…
