    Electrifying performance from Walter Huston and daring, provocative cinematography and special effects for 1941. The dancing of the damned at Jabez’s party eerily resembles the ending of Carnival of Souls

    On my first watch, a bit unsure it has anything to “say” other than asserting a type of morality based in cooperation and anti-greed as true Americanism. Its melodramatic nationalism kept me from fully connecting with it, but one of the most interesting examples I can think of where 1940s US creatives are looking to the 1840s for inspiration.
