Split decision. 5 stars for the first half of the film exploring the ethics of cloning a person over and over again just because he is expendable. 2 stars for the second half of the movie which degenerates into the usual half-baked satirical sci-fi drivel that focuses on how we “other-size” those who are alien to us.

Knocked off a half a star for the trigger warning at the beginning of the film which amounts to a pretty huge spoiler

Re-watch: Surprisingly potent for basically being an extended Cliffs Notes version of the Scottish Play. In Joel Coen’s first major release sans brother Ethan, a paring down to the bare essentials focuses our attention on the performances, particularly those of Denzel Washington as the usurper king Macbeth, Corey Hawkins as the defiant Macduff, and the often contorted Kathryn Hunter as various creepy incarnations of the Witches. Re-watch: Probably Jane Campion’s most cohesive movie since The Piano. As a character study of a repressed homosexual cowboy it’s a teensy bit lacking, mostly due to Benedict Cumberbatch’s casting as the lead. There is something… inexpressive about the man. He is always just fine, handsome but unemotional, which worked to his great benefit on Sherlock, and as Doctor Strange. Maybe the thought was that his emotional deficit would help ameliorate the inherent melodramatics of such a story. Anyway, can’t fault the movie itself. It’s pretty engrossing. This is just more of a nitpick justifying why it’s only rated four stars and not any higher.
