Beautiful film about virtue and ambition and finding other people who have found themselves ejected from society.

One of the great things about an adaptation of a book is that since you don’t know what is going on in a character’s head, you’re free to try to make connections based on the acting, the line readings, and the deliberate changes from the source material. And if you’re going to try to derive meaning from an actor’s portrayal of a famous character, Toshiro Mifune is an ideal actor to watch.

Tight little space western. Strange and bleak

I can’t give this movie a rating! It’s awful and glorious and has superb scenery chewing from the great Frank Langella. There’s nothing like Skeletor gripping his phallic scepter while he orders He-Man whipped with laser whips, while he intones “Tell me about the loneliness of good, He-Man. Is it equal to the loneliness of evil?”

Saw the extended edition at a local theater with a friend and I cried so much that my face hurt for two days. Nearly a perfect film that instantly transports me to my teenage and college years. It’s the second best fantasy film ever made. It’s a perfect blend of music, acting, and cinematography (tho some of the editing is a tiny bit dodgy) in service of an intelligent adaptation of a book I love.
