One of the great things about an adaptation of a book is that since you don’t know what is going on in a character’s head, you’re free to try to make connections based on the acting, the line readings, and the deliberate changes from the source material. And if you’re going to try to derive meaning from an actor’s portrayal of a famous character, Toshiro Mifune is an ideal actor to watch.
