I go to the cinema so often because maybe every 6 months, maybe every year, I watch a film like this, that just ignites something in me. Then I spend the next while chasing that high.

I love cute will-they-won’t-theys, I love motley crews, I love complex characters, I love layered themes, I love aircraft action and I love 150 foot tall lizards wrecking cities. Which pretty much makes this movie perfect for me.

    Civil War

    ★★★★½

Civil War is a film about a second civil war in America’s not too distant future, but also, it’s not about war at all.

If you’re going into this film with expectations of political intrigue, intelligent predictions or just any information on the cause of this fictional conflict, you will be disappointed, because this film is about people.

If, however, you’re going into this film to see humanity at it’s worse, to see the effect war has on people and…

This film is carried by many, phenomenal performances. Robert Pattinson has great range, Mark Ruffalo gives such a heightened and fun performance, and the highlight is of course Tim Keye, the icon himself.

The world building is really interesting too, succinct and unique. The satirical elements are clever, not at all subtle, but there’s nothing wrong with that, and overall it’s just funny.

A whole lot of nothing. The romance doesn’t particularly work, but the charisma of the two leads carry it. It has an interesting premise, fine action and great monster designs.

One complaint I had about Endgame was that it was too much fan service and spectacle, and not enough actual content. I was worried I’d have that complaint here, but I don’t.

Not only is it a spectacle, but it also has so much heart, so much great humour and quite a bit of meaning behind it.

One complaint I would have is the pacing early on.

That’s all I’ll say for now, because I think I need a rewatch for a full opinion.

    The Batman

The true strength of this movie comes from its realism. And I’m not talking about how it’s realistic in the sense of gadgets and suit and vehicles - where that is all true, the real strength for me is how realistically it shows what being The Batman would do to someone’s mindset and outlook.

These films are all brilliantly set up in the first act, with narration that is just so damn cool, and great dialogue with Alfred, just not…
