  Dune 1984

  ★½ Rewatched 14 Mar 2025

  The pros for the extended cut are tactical rearrangement of scenes to make the story less accidentally incomprehensible and most of the new non-prologue/reused material to be good. The cons are everything else, such as the prologue, the narration, the poor editing of the new material, and being three fucking hours long. Only watch this if you know for a fact you're going to rewatch Dune (1984) and wish to check out a curiosity, or know for a fact that after watching this first, you're going to watch the original version of Dune (1984). Pretty much a waste of time for everyone else.

  I'll endeavor myself to write a full-blown analysis of this film at a future point, but there's a number of important takeaways here:

  1) Unlike every online review of this film I've read from professional outlets, this movie is not just three films edited down. If it was, why would Tatsuya Oishi spend 7 to 8 years on it?   Someone posted a 240p version of this in a Discord server I'm in. By the final fight scenes, the movie had successfully Disintegration Loops'd itself. Perhaps the only video quality really necessary for this movie.
