Monster 2023
This film set out on a tightrope walk, in being utterly reliant on a natural feel to drape just so atop its calculated narrative; I think it sticks the landing with poise. Agonizing how no one talked, how dumb luck fills the vacuum and comes to dictate the terms!! - this is the precision-crafted story that mightve flown away in disbelief were it not grounded in such vivid performances - and so it is gorgeously, sweetly, crushingly agonizing and moving all the same. In shame, only death, in truth we are reborn.
RIP Ryuichi Sakamoto, you are sorely missed

Full credit to my wife for this take: honestly a refreshing subversion of the spy vs spy trope to end not on a cheeky, unsettling cliffhanger that casts some ultimate doubt on one of the characters true motives, but rather a touching reconciliation. It was set up so well too, how their love was seen by the rest of the players as exploitable, but their unwavering trust in each other became their strength, like yeah these people are terrifying but also aww you actually never expect love to prevail in movies like this

Greedy, fast-paced, seriously British little obsession flick, tastes of dry scones smeared with summer sweat and clotted cream. Barry Keoghan is the main intoxicant here, he’s so fun to watch oozing around, equal parts wounded puppy and chilling predator.
Although it moves quickly, I really appreciated its patience with holding onto any reveals, even til it does inevitably lean on a whodunnit montage type moment, it mostly kept me dazed and second guessing. What left me somewhat wanting more was that…Translated from by -
Perfect Days 2023
A Zen film in essence, and a film that is also a portrait: of a hero, not as such through conflict nor redemption, but in his state of being; though he lives and breathes routine, he throws himself whole into that monotonous flow and, through sheer presence, finds meaningful inspiration in his every day.
Our hero is not immune to the tribulations of life, he cries and drinks and occasionally smokes when it all gets to be too much, but…
