With Denis Villeneuve at the helm I knew regardless of the acting or the script, the visuals and audio would be outstanding, as they were. Marketed as a horror film, mother! deserves it's own genre of stress.
The powerful way of keeping the audience in the dark by following the mother (literally and metaphorically) closely help entice the feeling of stress. Being led from one shocking situation to the next, mother! plays deeply on one's ability to empathize with the mother character and, in doing so entices stress as shock after shock happen, seemingly coming from nowhere.
