The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari 1920
Like watching a box of creepy old photos come to life. The magic of such a classic film is marked by so many unique aspects, from the nightmare Dr Seuss setting, to the titular figure’s Babadook duds, to the uncanny energy of the silent staticky action. It’s much more shadow than substance, yet still delivers such a rich frightening little fable.

Elemental 2023
Haters won’t get that this is the best Pixar movie in years; they’ll pass the time laughing at the jokey intersections of nature and racism but won’t see the vision that makes every great Pixar flick. But Peter Sohn’s vision is SO there, the love, the effervescence, the joy of creation and inspiration that brings tears to your eyes, all of it is such a felt sense of this movie.
