That Thing You Do! 1996
I was grinning ear to ear for like 80% of this movie. RIP Adam Schlesinger, your song(s) made the whole damn thing work (and I can’t believe people are still walking around nonchalantly spreading the virus that killed you).
Steve Zahn is so incredibly funny. Tom Hanks knows how to make a dang movie! Loved it loved it. Gonna go get some shades now.

Black Orpheus 1959
While not squarely in the realm of the Musical genre, few films are as full of music and life as this. From the opening credits, it’s impossible not to fall in love with Marcel Camus’s Rio.
Black Orpheus manages to be vibrant even in its tragedy—this Orpheus is a magnet for spectacle and melody and finds it both at carnival and in a bizarre bureaucratic underworld. Perhaps the most eternal truth in this old story, though, is that being a guitar player is a curse in itself.

Tomboy 2011
What an incredible performance by Zoé Héran, not to mention all of the other kids in the film. Céline Sciamma is such a wonderful storyteller, and this really showcases her ability to convey an unparalleled depth with queer and gender-nonconforming characters experiencing the turmoil of inner lives intersecting in confusing ways with outer ones. My favorite relationship in this film is the one between Lauré/Mikael and their little sister Jeanne—the way Jeanne playfully keeps their cover story under wraps was downright adorable.
