the disgustingly complex horror which is man.
working backwards, telling the story in reverse, complimented by alex’s discussion of fate, ignited a tenderness in the second half which i didn’t think was possible after what we saw in the first. the movie hits a point in the middle, i’m sure we all know what i’m talking about, where i almost had to turn it off. my vision quite literally went blurry, my brain attempting to escape a sequence which…
as is my experience with most of lynch’s work, my brain was working overtime in an attempt to unravel everything whilst my heart was left entirely unprovoked. i was left feeling drained but not in a way which was at all valuable, a reflection of its incredibility, but because i didn’t find the concepts gripping enough.
having said this, i love and admire so many aspects of his work and his evidently unique creative process and presentation.
such a shame. his films always start off with me thinking i’m going to love them and then they lose me in their arbitrary and somewhat pretentious muck.
