The atmosphere is unforgettable in this movie. It's also too long and too melodramatic, however. People say 'Read the book' but I am not sure that the book can salvage some missed opportunities in the plot like the two main characters in protagonist's life, his main enemy and his biggest love never intersecting. I was absolutely sure that they would intersect in some morbid way. But the ending is much more boring. The scenes with Laughton are easily the best. But yes, it's very atmospheric and memorable and the acting is good most of the time.

I really liked how the actor portrayed the protagonist, especially in the beginning, when he was less of a monster and more of a man with grey morality. I actually think the beginning with this ambiguous pedophile plot may be slightly more interesting and more nuanced compared to the second half of the movie which turns to more classic propaganda (which I don't mind, it's a good anti Nazi movie about Poland, my land). The plot is disjointed and there were probably too many long, mundane scenes with Anna but the movie picked up the tempo nicely in the latter half, delivering as…

I wanted to like it, but the plot was meandering... I still don't know whether the movie was about Nitzcheanism, protagonist's mental state, his relationship with the girl, or the defense of the case. It also dropped a very heavy-handed spiel about mercy at the ending, which aged terribly in our age of wealthy people getting away from law constantly. I am not an advocate for hangings, but there is a limit of how much I can stand those two…
