Everything about this film is one thing, and Tilda Swinton's performance is another, literally unmatched.
Billy Zane's acting was the weakest link to me, and that part in general, altho it seems to have been changed a bit from the novel, and I like the direction they took instead.
Something that irked me quite a bit though is the portrayal of the "East", which is supposed to be Constantinople (novel)/I guess just a vague "Ottoman Empire" here, and it's not…

And this film has the worst writing of females characters I've *ever* seen.

I just can't get over how one of the central elements of this film is the "Hero's" quest to get with an *UNDERAGE* *FORCED* sex worker.
Yes the film is "wacky" and says a thing or two about "society", and yes it has really great performances by Dorota Stalińska in a single scene, or Jerzy Stuhr.
But still, the core plot element is beyond horrendous, plus the film is not just a male-pov in the most disgusting way, it's a gigantic misogyny fest.It was a very uncomfortable watch.
