  I do not understand what people's expectations were. Were they expecting some type of extremely deep, never-before-said message? The movie portrayed perfectly the transition from a low self-esteem failed psychotic comedian to the Joker we all know and love, which could not have been done without Joaquin Phoenix's performance.

  The movie was indeed heavily influenced by movies like Taxi Driver, however it is still it's own thing. The message was simple and clear; direction and music were great. Overall, I loved it.
