One of the worst films I’ve seen, without a doubt. What a waste of talent and budget. And what they did to Susan Sarandon! She is beautiful, and they dressed her in THE MOST un-flattering outfits imaginable. And Jack Nicholson too!
Of all the devil-comes-to-town stories, this must be the worst.
I adored this film. It is a comfort film, in its most sublime form: a realistic story. You aren’t being sold a pipe dream; carried off to Neverland or some sweeping romantic saga. You are, rather, being reminded of the real world; of its ugliness, and how to overcome it. The message is this: be kind, because life can be cruel, and you are not its only victim. And have integrity in the face of the void, because it means you have something of worth to fall back on in hard times. These can be achievements enough.
