War is hell. This film is an experience. It minimizes narrative and maximizes the aesthetic aspect of the destruction of war and hell on earth. The pairing of classical music with these long aerial shots of the devastation of the blackened oil fields and their ever-burning fires is startlingly beautiful and horrific. This is why I am a fan of Werner Herzog.
This is one of those movies where you don't know where it's going in the beginning but by the end it all ties together nicely and with poignancy. The Q&A at the end of the film has an apt observation from the director Herzog himself, that the 21st century, with its vastly developed technology dedicated to communication and global connectedness, is paradoxically a time of "many solitudes." This is my second and a half time watching this film. I watched half of it again after a year off from my first time at my friend Maxime's house and then I decided I had to watch it all again from the beginning. The moments, the melody of the film (even the ones I've seen before) were worth watching AGAIN. There were some beautiful moments in this filim. I'll watch it again some time soon.
