The Hunt for Red October 1990
Machines never really do it for me, and Red October is more concerned with the fetishisation of military technology and the machinations of Cold War diplomacy than with forming tension between characters. They're largely surface level, and they have to be to justify Clancy's form of patriotism. As cliched as they are, credit to McTiernan for giving enough characterisation to make technological mumbo jumbo legible (and entertaining) to a wide audience.
Having seen Crimson Tide before this, I prefer the anxiety wrought from the claustrophobia amongst a crew, rather than the spatially disconnected suspense between different vessels.

The Pursuit of Happyness 2006
A crowdpleaser thats hard to hate thanks to Will's stardom, even with its Reaganoid "pick up by your boot straps" conclusion. Funny how its never clear what exactly a stockbroker does, as showing the bloodsucking and whore fucking would undermine the wholesome message.
