Kinda like its main character, Crimewave is basically always awkward but never ceases to be charming. You can see the cracks in the foundation as quite a lot of it lacks the impeccable sense of rhythm the rest of his films have (especially in the editing), but some of the comedy bits in this are among the best Raimi has ever done (the dance competition had me in hysterics).
The whole thing has the feeling of a Three Stooges sketch…
I feel like Pete Seeger could've up and killed complete stranger in cold blood, and it wouldn't have had as strong a stain on his legacy as trying to turn off the soundboard during Maggie's Farm did.
Not that I'm saying we SHOULDN'T condemn him for trying to do that...

Throughout basically this entire film I couldn't help but think of those movies that exist almost exclusively for the purpose of being nominated for the Best Actress Oscar (The Wife, Nyad, My Week With Marilyn etc.), as it seems the idea behind this was mostly just to cast the notorious Klaus Kinski as a crazy ex-nazi serial killer landlord and work out the rest once he'd been booked.
This appears to have mostly resulted in a flabby and shapeless film that exists at an awkward halfway point between grimy slasher flick and quietly haunting character study of its lead, and does neither concept justice.
The people who said this wasn't faithful to the franchise's tone must've have felt *pretty* stupid when Resident Evil 4 came out like 3 years later and was completely identical (barring an aesthetic change away from Post-Matrix Gothic Sci-Fi to something more Rural and Autumnal).
I also simply don't understand why anyone would even care about the lack of characters from the game's when we have Alice here as a homunculus that draws from all of them, old and new!…
