Despite being del Toro's first feature film, with all the problems that entails, you can truly feel his talents despite the movie. It's like reading the first book in a famously good series before the author worked out all the kinks: There's just something extra there.
It is despite the movie though, let me make that clear. It has plenty of issues, weird choices, and a lack of focus.
Still, I had a good enough time with it, even if I was watching it well past when I should've been sleeping and ended up napping from time to time watching it.
