Red One 2024
I feel like there could have been a fun movie here. Some of the practical effects and costumes were fun, although the cgi definitely had some issues. The premise is not bad.
The biggest problem is that the tone is all over the place. The setting and premise are whimsical and fun. The performances are given like the movie is a gritty crime thriller. Nick Kroll is the only one who seems to know what kind of movie he is…

The Big Year 2011
I don’t have a lot bad to say about this movie, there just doesn’t seem to be a lot happening. There are few if any stakes throughout. No one (other than Rosamund Pike and a couple of the side characters) is given much to do. It does make it a little more interesting that it’s based on a true story.
The last 20 minutes pick up a little bit, and the ending is not bad. I think more wide shots and focus on some of the habitats they visit would give it more of a sense of adventure. There is some of that, but not enough.

Mufasa: The Lion King 2024
The CG in this movie are very impressive. The characters look and move pretty realistically. Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen’s Timon and Pumbaa routine brought some laughs, even though only about half of it landed.
That’s about the extent of the good. The music was okay, but not well performed. The story was contrived and predictable, with the exception of the heel turn (even though we knew it was coming) which felt abrupt. The references to the Lion King were ham-fisted at best. I wasn’t wondering how Pride Rock came to be. And Mufasa somehow has super powers, including echolocation?
