This was a nice surprise for me. I expected the acting to be solid and it is for sure but this film had more "bite" to it about the ups and downs of romantic relationships in the 2020's. 12 Months avoids the snark and meta-ness of most indie films these days and exposes real folks' insecurities. Well worth seeking out.
I loved jumping back into the cinematic world of Douglas Reese. I've really missed it! With Metayouu, he absolutely pushed some nostalgia buttons within me. Just enough modern tech to contrast with the amazing stock tv footage and the tantalizing mystery of what it's all supposed to mean. Always edited with genuine respect for his on-screen characters. Certainly worth a look.
A bizarre, truly experimental piece that is sometimes hypnotic, sometimes mind-numbing, but never totally uninteresting. I'd describe Cincinnati Storm as Reese's version of Fricke's Samsara - instead of highlighting cultural significance on a global scale, he focuses laser-like on the city of Cincinnati and his own isolation within it.
Blue Guitar is one of the saddest films I have ever seen. In the Reese canon, this is like his version of Bergman's Scenes From a Marriage (but is actually much darker) where Tiffany Jordan and Kole Riggs run each other through with apathetic knives.
Taking place over one evening, things begin reasonably enough with the one thing almost everyone in relationships can relate to: what the hell to eat for dinner. They bicker superficially at first but unease sets…
