  What I dig about Yang’s filmmaking is how he lets the setting speak for itself. The wide shots of everyday life: ornate sets filled with character that showcase a mundane charm, but also the rot, like the unmaintained, decaying infrastructure or the authoritarian esthetics that permeate the setting. How uncaring it is for those trying to find warmth and security in the everyday.
