Paprika 2006
i was too harsh previously, but my critique about the exposition is still valid. the first act is very exposition heavy, but it needs to be with how convoluted the concept of the film can be at times. The animation is so inventive throughout because of the dream-logic, some of the larger scale sequences are so visually interesting. It’s solid but Perfect Blue is a much better film.

can see how Carti took so much inspiration from this aesthetically for WLR. goofy fun with great visuals! a great example of the style BEING the substance.

had an entirely unique experience with this where after crying for the majority of the runtime, once it ended i just sobbed. one of those cathartic cries that i haven’t had for a while, like when you were a kid. Out of breath, exhausted, dry throat, just sobbing. 45 minutes straight after the film finished. I was an absolute mess. (thank god I was by myself) A film has never elicited such a reaction from me.

Licorice Pizza 2021
Had the pleasure of seeing this in 70 mm at Village East in New York City, and it was amazing. Easily the best thing to come out this year, pretty flawless. Alana Haim gives an amazing performance, and PTA’s cinematography is wonderful. Big Punch-Drunk Love vibes on this one!!!! Another example of PTA being the best director working right now.
