This is the first bad Wilder I've ever seen. It is quite bad.

It always seemed like a terrible idea to remake Suspiria. Guadagnino's version is, for the most part, extraordinarily dull. Its also weighed down by an incredible sense of self-importance. The cast equip themselves well and there's a couple of interesting scenes, but this woefully misconceived film is close to being a disaster.

Superb body-horror. De Van exhibits terrific formal imagination and searing intellect. She is also magnificent and utterly fearless in the lead role. This has been classed as part of the New French Extremism movement from the early 2000s but it stands out as being very much a film that plays by its own rules (not to say other films often classed under that term don't - particularly Breillat's).

It certainly has some horrifically stomach-churning moments, but it is much more…

A curious Warhol-produced oddity. Morrissey is a talented director. This is certainly not as good or as accessible as his duel magnum opus of Flesh for Frankenstein or Blood for Dracula but it's still a very interesting piece of work. The unusual framing and cuts seem to definitely prefigure Von Trier's work. The acting manages to somehow seem utterly amateurish and absolutely realistic. It's a film that requires patience but it also is testament to an era where open-mindedness was prevalent both in how films were made and in film criticism. Recommended for discerning film viewers.
