The chemistry just isn’t really quite there with Grant and Wilby, despite great performances to each, but the story and the filmmaking are seriously strong. The camerawork is perfectly dramatic and the film is packed with very lush, beautifully designed sets. I think I was hoping for more of that atmosphere to seep into the yearning, angsty plot, but it only rarely gets that emotionally saucy and in its place spends a lot of time engaging in the brooding patriarchal politicking that its characters are also more or less forced to engage with. “England has always been disinclined to accept human nature.”

Beautiful artwork, animation, and music. Story is fun, sweet, and sincere, even if quite simple on the surface.
