This has been more criticized than it deserves. Ultimately, I think this is a very good debut film from Maggie Gyllenhaal. The only complaints I have is:
(1) there are some portions of the film that feel like a really long simmer that doesn't really go anywhere, and
(2) I wish there was more exploration of the things that contributed to Leda feeling this was. Was she pressured into having children? Was she blindly following…
Alfre Woodard deserves more recognition for her role here. Unfortunately, the movie suffers from bad pacing and a fragmented story. The husband’s storyline felt like an unnecessary addition to me. I also find the story of the sympathetic warden who suddenly (years into her career) starts getting emotionally damaged from her work. Not a huge sports movie fan and even among sports movies I’d say this is subpar. Some of the POV shots skiing down the courses were pretty interesting and I imagine fairly innovative for the time.
