I appreciate that Ethan and Maya Hawke are very much interested in what I’m interested in: Flannery O’Connor, sin and grace, the intersection of art and religion, the mystery of faith, Liam Neeson playing an Irish priest, among other things.

Bong is up to some really smart and funny stuff in Mickey 17, he just may be juggling too much in one movie for it to measure up to his best work. I’m trying not to hold that against it too much but this is the guy that gave us Parasite and Memories of Murder. Still counting my blessings to get big-budget sci-fi from a master.

I did enjoy Pattinson quite a bit; it’s a risky and varied performance. And I always wish there was more Steven Yeun. Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette are wonderful actors, but their big performances get exhausting in a hurry.

While Wes Anderson has always been known for his distinctive visual style, maybe he doesn’t get enough credit for his innovative and ambitious writing and storytelling. Asteroid City excels beautifully on both fronts. Possibly my fave Wes since Moonrise Kingdom.

Savage, uncompromising, fully immersive cinema. I don’t even know which parts to highlight because it’s all so thrilling and impressive. Robert Eggers has done it again.
