    The Brutalist

    ★★★½

Walking out of the Brutalist’s wonderful screening in 70 mm at Picturehouse Central, I had that distinct feeling you get after walking out of a Nolan movie. The world feels larger than life and every sound and sight feels cinematic for some reason. Whilst on the way home, I started collecting my thoughts and couldn’t quite pin down how I felt so I’ll try my best here.

The film undoubtedly shows great vigour in directing, acting, cinematography and wonderful set…

A very underrated film in Bong Joon Ho's catalogue! Beautifully executed in every single way and a perfect example of how to do twists well. Oh and that dance scene..

    We Live in Time

    ★★★

Whilst having some very sweet moments and strong lead performances, the film severely lacks in authenticity or a coherent characterisation. None of the characters feel fully fleshed out or real unfortunately, despite how good Pugh and Garfield are. The non-linear timeline felt both random and without purpose as well, probably existing just to make it more engaging. All in all, the ingredients were there but the screenplay and director let it down. That birth scene at the gas station though!

  • Dune

    Dune

    ★★½

Dune should be renamed DULL. Overrated and bland, Dune builds a world that is beautiful but ultimately lacks any sort of pulse or excitement. After a somewhat promising first act, the film slowly descends into run of the mill boy-that-was-chosen tropes and doesn’t really go anywhere. Timothy Chalamet unfortunately doesn’t seem to show any charisma and neither do any of the rest of the (on paper very impressive) cast. Denis Villeneuve seems to have lost his touch a little bit…
