Lit like a radio play, and the loses ground whenever it starts speechifying, but a basically well made recounting of a crime against humanity.

Mike Birbiglia: The Old Man and the Pool 2023
I can’t think of anyone better at pacing and consistently nailing a thematic ending.

Still a little unsettled about how I feel about this film. The depiction of loneliness that comes with starting college is striking, and the willingness to show a young male lead actually experience tearful sadness is noteworthy. Yet, while I’m fairly confident the film is in on this, our make lead’s behavior is both completely believable as how a “sensitive” late teen male will behave towards women, it’s also something that raises incel flags for me that make it hard for me not to feel there is a toxicity to this character that the film doesn’t recon with before its happy ending.
