I unfortunately, completely by happenstance, watched this film the day Roe v Wade was officially overturned. When the moment where Arnold Schwarzenegger pushes Frank Langella through a shelf of chemicals, and seemingly turns directly to the camera and proclaims, "My body, my choice" happened, I seriously thought that a SWAT team was about to break through three corners of my living room and take me in. Even though that didn't happen, I'm definitely now on a list that I don't want to be on somewhere. Also, Emma Thompson as a Schwarzenegger love interest is a deep trivia pull. Danny does great.
One of those unique, mainstream horrors that has way more on its mind than required. As slick as they come, in both cinematography and sound, Candyman straddles the line between legacy sequel and 21st century horror purely byway of Nia DaCosta’s incomparable energy and skill. A tale about tales, and the powers they wield, this bad boy is going down as one of the greats in a sub-genre (horror sequels) that is riddled with half-assed attempts to replicate the charms…
