Hard not to admire the artistic integrity & ambition of this film, but there were times where I couldn’t stop thinking the POV approach was taking away from the narrative. The POV is intimate and effective-especially early on when confronted to view the surroundings of the world through the eyes of a black boy- but the POV also feels cold and distant in crucial moments and conversations when a more traditional approach (for lack of a better word) may have felt more humanistic. Also willing to admit that tension may be (probably is) the point. A bold film, that’s for sure.

Kind of akin to a Gilliam film in the sense that the exuberance of the visual ideas takes center stage and the plot is secondary to whatever Coppola finds exciting in the moment. Totally enjoyed the experience of it.

Ultimately It Comes At Night is about two competing world views contrasted against each other in an apocalyptic setting; That of an understandably mistrusting, fearful, protective father and his sheltered son still left with hope in the world.
