Alice in Wonderland 1951
Stressful ass movie with a bunch of British people yelling at you everywhere. I originally wanted to watch this ‘cause I read somewhere that Miyazaki said the early Disney movies were a big influence on him. I can definitely hear him say “Ay what the fuck? THIS is a whimsical children’s movie? no no no no no no no.” Boom. Totoro.
Anyways if I had children, I would not be showing this movie to them.
A saving grace: the animation is beautiful.

Embrace of the Serpent 2015
Is the acquisition of knowledge for the more effective means of survival, inherently colonization? Would you allow the perversion of your own culture for a form of pleasure? Is living alone, guided by the divine or guided by the vacuum, the only way to be true to yourself? Are the divine and the vacuum different? If Jesus extended his thigh and said, “eat me!” would you? Find out more in “El Abrazo de la Serpiente” or not. whatever.

The Spirit of the Beehive 1973
The night after I watched this movie, I dreamt I was in this world. A world teetering on rose honey colored deception. The adults all pretend to know what’s going on but they’re just as lost and seemingly innocent as everyone else. Also, the Francoist have just won the civil war. I’ve been thinking about this movie every day since I’ve watched it.

The Devil's Backbone 2001
This is Guillermo Del Toro fully formed and all it took was a terrible experience with Hollywood and the desperation to want full control over your own project. This is a fantastic movie and like so much of his future work, exploring the choice to live within the fantastical elements of innocence despite knowing all of your efforts should go into survival, and even when you do choose fantasy sometimes you still got to choose the gat. The gat and the fairy are not incongruent.
