Interestingly a German-French co-production, this film showcasing the American West was created and financed by a European team. The overall direction and cinematography are stellar, featuring beautiful landscapes and outdoor scenes. The use of color is striking, creating a visual feast for the viewer.

Harry Dean Stanton plays the lead role of an extremely flawed man and father, recovering from post traumatic amnesia (among other likely mental health ailments). He's able to communicate so much through the use of nonverbal…

The horrors of bullying those who are different, including those who are neurodivergent, was extremely well portrayed in The Outcasts. I connected with this film at a high level, from the landscapes, characters, and themes, it's my jam. Beautiful stuff, and I look forward to revisiting this. What a fantastic discovery by Deaf Crocodile!

National Guard members journey through the visually striking Louisiana swamps, navigating various personalities and toxic masculine infighting, attempting to work together towards a common goal. Acting was great, and it was cool seeing a young Keith Carradine, my favorite of the bunch. I felt surprised how beautiful the swamps looked despite our characters likely wanting to be anywhere else.

A great story, acting, and cinematography, A Simple Plan kept me on the edge of my seat as the tension of the narrative progressed. Humans are inherently flawed, continually making decisions. On occasion, some choices result in drastic shifts of life's trajectories, for better or worse. This film showcased decision making and related consequences in heartbreaking fashion, and it's awesome.

Guilt. It's an emotion that can be so challenging to sit with that it's ultimately avoided, or in this case, an end result of dissociation. It was really interesting seeing Lynch's take on the grieving and conflicted mind, working to rationalize a horrific action. This is certainly a film that will be properly consumed over multiple viewings, which is fortunately the case for this director's catalog of films. It's complicated, chaotic, and mesmerizing, with great cinematography and a killer score. Looking forward to a re-watch!

Pretty as a Picture: The Art of David Lynch

Included as a supplement for Criterion's Lost Highway release, this feature-length documentary focuses primarily on said film but also highlights other Lynch creations. Some footage was repeated from other entries, most notably the Eraserhead reunion, which I felt was unnecessary as most fans will have already viewed this piece. Seeing some of David's art through painting was nice, and I always find his interviews fascinating.
