Nosferatu 2024
the first act is so captivating and steeped in nightmarish atmosphere i unfortunately found everything after it to be lacking. watching a sweaty, sickly guy run around an empty castle and shake like a leaf because he wants a job really bad is mesmerizing, what can i say. lots of ideas to chew on, like the conflation of property ownership and marriage, or the harding household being the exemplary (blond!), "correct" way to conduct heterosexuality, in contrast with the hutters—i'll have to get my hands on the source material(s) to see if these themes are unique to the adaptation or not.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie 1969
the conventional story of an unorthodox and beloved schoolteacher, who eschews curriculum in favor of passionate speeches and life lessons, is gradually peeled away to reveal the manipulative and egotistical rot underneath. as her carefully cherrypicked band of schoolgirls begins to fall apart, miss brodie carries on under the delusion that she's still playing a part in the familiar and inspirational coming-of-age story.
a nice surprise that this proved my initial suspicions correct and draws direct (unsubtle!) connections between the pursuit of perfection, obsession with beauty, and fascism.

Evil Does Not Exist 2023
still mulling over the last ten minutes, like many others. the meetings are riveting, from a tense town hall to a corporate video call; i was pleasantly surprised when we got to see the "other side". love how human-made light sources radiate outward into sharp points, like the camera is astigmatic.
