    Duvall steals a bunch of tricks he learned from the directors he spent a career working with, and crafts one of the quintessential American films.

    Most notable of Duvall's "stolen tricks" is his Altmanesque use of slow compound camera movements (usually by combining a zoom with a tracking shot) and long takes in sequences with many actors. But the still, spare aesthetics of Bruce Beresford's 'Tender Mercies' are also evident -especially when the film is indoors.
