Good noir material in need of an editor. Scene transitions are jarring, action sequences are more funny than thrilling (off-screen thwack, henchman crumples). This private dick---Mike Hammer, classic name---leans a bit too far into the seedy to be cheerable and his intelligence/resourcefulness isn't as much demonstrated as it is implied to keep the plot moving forward (e.g. he intuits not only one car bomb but two, but intuits that the second car bomb would be safe to drive slowly with;…

It's uneven, but the high parts rescue, or even justify, the low parts. Watched with friends and laughed a lot as we realized what kind of movie it really was.

For the first half, the title holds true. For the second, it turns from the punchy laughs and gleeful play to complex domesticity. The pace and tone take more measured steps and therein lose a lot of the pleasure I had in the first half. And Omar Sharif's honeyed charm, unchecked, gets in the way of sympathy for his character, which the movie needs most to hit the landing for the domestic bits.
