Good book, but this adaptation fumbles the deeper character stories and motivations in an attempt to simplify things.

If you bring a giant tortoise to my house I'm definitely losing it too.

Maniac Cop 1988
Entertaining and smartly cast; Maniac Cop manages to combine the familiar tropes of classic 80's action flicks and the slasher horror genre into a shotgun blast of gorings that's not afraid to dispose of its characters. However, where it falls short is in a largely predictable plot, that fails to go further with its character development or in its of the era societal critiques peppered throughout. Still, some great one-liners and payoff scenes packaged neatly in a pervasive mood that works.

The Fog 1980
In The Fog, a maturer Carpenter and Hill offer up an old-fashioned budget ghost story with a well-woven intercutting narrative. The moody jazz score plays along neatly with classically approached special effects, and pervasive Hitchcock nods beyond the familiar Bodega Bay and surrounding area. The striking location choices, coupled with smart casting and well-executed jump scares keep it feeling fresh upon re-watching. In all, though the production team struggles throughout to develop a more visually dense, plot driven film beyond Halloween - the summation is a brilliant and minor success.
